Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb — both Democrats — supported today’s failed amendment that would have made concealed weapons permits issued in one state valid in all others.
The amendment failed 58-39, after intense lobbying from gun control and gun rights advocates.
Warner’s office told the Associated Press that the former governor is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Webb’s spokesman told the AP the senator has previously supported similar bills.
Victims and relatives of those killed in the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre fought the measure, saying it would allow states with lax gun laws to set the standard for the rest of the country.
