Gov. Tim Kaine (D) said he was “surprised” that the co-chair of his inaugural committee, Sheila Johnson, has thrown her support behind Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell.
Johnson announced Monday that she’s backing McDonnell instead of Democrat Creigh Deeds because of the Republican’s “new and innovative ideas.”
The co-founder of Black Entertainment Television, Johnson has given $600 million to Kaine and his political action committee, Moving Virginia Forward.
She insisted Monday that the endorsement did not reflect any fracture in her relationship with the governor.
“Not at all, couldn’t be further from the truth,” she told reporters.
Kaine said he respects Johnson’s decision, adding that the move reminds politicians “thank goodness it’s 50 percent plus one.”
