Del. Chris Saxman (R-Staunton) will announce today that he is pulling out of his re-election campaign, a GOP source on Capitol Square said. The 20th District delegate will talk about his decision at a news conference this afternoon.
Saxman will focus on other opportunities, said the official, who is close to the House leadership. The Staunton Republican was first elected in 2001.
Saxman was apparently meeting with Augusta County Republicans this morning to talk about the process of selecting a replacement. Party leaders will pick a candidate to take Saxman’s place in a contest against Democrat Erik Curren.
His decision is critical to the GOP effort to hold onto control of the House of Delegates this fall. All 100 seats are up for grabs. Republicans held a six-seat advantage heading into the re-election season.
Much more on this developing story later today.
