Gov. Tim Kaine (D) said Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA 05) is in “good shape,” despite fierce GOP criticism of the freshman congressman’s vote on a controversial energy bill.
Kaine, talking to reporters after an event in Richmond today, said Perriello cast an “historic” vote for the so-called “cap-and-trade” bill, which calls for a vast overhaul of American energy policy.
“[Perriello] has some that don’t like it, but look, that’s natural,” Kaine said.
The governor — who also serves as chairman of the Democratic National Committee — said Perriello has the full support of the White House and the national party. Kaine said Democrats would step-in to defend Perriello if necessary, but added that the congressman is doing “quite well.”
Perriello, who’s taken a licking on editorial pages across his district, is asking backers to write letters to the editor expressing their support for the energy vote.
