Cantor Slams Energy Bill Ahead of Vote

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) has released a Web video criticizing Democrats on the eve of a vote on a significant climate change measure.

At issue is the so-called “cap-and-trade” measure, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, and by 80 percent in 2050.

“[Democrats] call it cap-and-trade, we call it cap-and-tax,” the announcer says, adding that the measure “will kill economic growth.”

Republicans allege that the bill amounts to a huge energy tax on American families.

“Their number one priority is a national energy tax on all of us,” the video’s narrator says.

Cantor has been all over cable news today defending his position. He claims the bill will cost families $3,100.

Democrats, meanwhile, point to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office’s analysis that the legislation would cost the average American family a total of $175. Because the measure should be on the House floor tomorrow, it appears Democrats believe they have the votes to pass the bill.
