Gov. Bob McDonnell will deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech next week.
McDonnell’s office made the announcement Thursday, after word leaked to the national press.
The governor is viewed as a rising star in his party.
McDonnell is not the first Virginian to deliver a SOTU response. Gov. Tim Kaine (D) spoke in 2006. Sen. Jim Webb (D) responded in 2007.
Kaine’s speech was panned; Webb’s was praised.
Indeed, the national spotlight could be cruel or kind to McDonnell. We hope to have more details about his address in the coming days.
